Are You The One? Season 8|E5: I'm Definitely Feeling FOMO Right Now
Are you feeling FOMO because you weren’t in on this fivesome?
You’re not alone, AYTO fam. But before we get into the big main event, let’s talk about how we got there, yeah?
As always, we begin this episode by reflecting on how the Match Up Ceremony from last week went. Danny says this was a successful Match Up because they switched it up and still got two beams.
Kari and Kylie have sat together for every Match Up Ceremony, so they’re starting to develop a strategy. You see, they think they’re a beam, so they want to keep sitting together so there’s not a black out. Therefore, they don’t want to go to the truth booth, because if they go to the truth booth and go into the honeymoon suite, they no longer count towards not blacking out, and therefore the chances of the house blacking out are higher. You follow?
Yeah, let’s be real. These two just don’t want to go to the Honeymoon Suite, because that sounds like a lot less fun than being in the house with all of your friends. We’ve seen it before on previous seasons. Don’t try to pretend this is a strategy thing. ANYWAY.
After their fallout last week, Amber and Nour are talking again. Nour says she misses her best friend/person. Nour says, “I know I fucked up multiple times, and you don’t deserve that at all, because you’re literally a fucking queen.” Amber says she knows what she deserves and she knows her worth, but she still thinks they might be a match. So strategically, she’s going to go after Nour even though she knows she deserves better.
Paige AKA sexy Harry Potter (?) observes all this and says she’s not going to intervene if they want to get back together.
Speaking of people making out with people they shouldn’t be making out with… guess what? There’s more drama with Justin and Max on the horizon.
This week, Justin says, “I’m really feeling Max, but Max has tunnel vision, and I want to stay more open and get to know way more people.” Because “strategy,” right? Right.
Max says he thinks they should go to the truth booth to find out if they’re a match. Justin says the reason Kai and Jenna went into the Truth Booth is because they weren’t exploring other options, and he wants to explore his options. Are we seeing a pattern of people not wanting to go to the Honeymoon Suite and miss out on the fun in the house? The FOMO is real.
The plot thickens. Remember how Aasha was grinding on Max and Justin last week? This week she has declared that Max and Justin are her two boyfriends. Aasha definitely wants to bone both of them. Together.
So yeah… Justin and Aasha make out. Justin says, “We’re here because this is a house full of bisexuals, and I want to fully experience that.”
The house screams to Max that his boyfriend is making out with someone else, and Max is NOT HAPPY. He storms in on them. Announces, "“You look like a fucking ho, bro.” Storms off.
In other news, Jenna thinks she and Danny might be a match because she likes someone smart and funny and she loves math and science. Danny’s love language is science facts, so in response, he just spouts out a bunch of facts about shit. It’s very hot. Much appreciated.
Challenge time! This challenge is all about non-verbal communication. Terrence J. tells the group that relationships have always been about learning how to communicate without words, but now in the digital world, that has turned into translating with emojis. So these couples will have to translate each other’s emoji messages.
They can couple up with whoever they want to in this challenge, and so of course Kari and Kylie don’t pair up because they don’t want to be thrown into the truth booth. Grrr. Anyway, here’s how it goes.
Can you translate the message above? Danny was asked to write an emoji describing his happiest memory, and this is what he wrote. Obviously he was in musical theater in college and he ended up performing in a production of Spring Awakening. Jenna nails it. Danny is thrilled.
Next up is Nour and Amber. Nour tries to tell Amber she climbed mount Evans in Colorado and saw goats at the top. Yeah, Amber can’t figure that out. Remy’s like, “Bitch, why did you think you could write that in emojis?”
Kai and Kari are paired up. Kai guesses that Kari left her music group because it was really bad for her and she became a party promoter. Totally right. I have no idea how Kai got this. Jenna is jealous, but like… girl that ain’t your match.
Max and Paige are up next. Max is asked to describe a time when he felt sad. In emojis, he describes what happened with Justin the previous night when Justin made out with Aasha.
Now it’s Justin and Aasha’s turn. Justin says his biggest fear is people leaving him. It’s clear he and Max are just having this argument through emojis so maybe just let them win, even though they’re not paired together.
Justin says, “I’m still learning what it means to love. I definitely have some abandonment issues that I need to work on.” Ugh, Justin breaking my heart. I’m turning into a softie.
Anyway, despite their ability to communicate love and heartbreak through emojis only, Justin and Max do not win this date. Instead, it’s Kari and Kai and Jenna and Danny. Not awkward AT ALL.
After the challenge, Justin and Basit have a heart-to-heart, and here’s where we as viewers begin to wonder why Dr. Frankie is even necessary when Basit is in the house. Justin tells Basit about his abandonment issues. His mom kicked him out of the house when he was 14 because she had a new boyfriend who didn’t want him around. It’s all very sad. Justin is crying. He says, “If anyone says that they love you, you don’t take it. You don’t want them to say that they love you. Because she said she loved you, and she didn’t love you.”
Was I crying? No, you were crying. Shut up.
Anyway, y’all want to hear about a fivesome or what? Here’s how it all goes down. Jenna says all she wants is Kai. As much as she adores Danny, she’s still infatuated with Kai. They’re making out. I’m sorry, I still think Kai is incredibly gross. Jenna says, “Sometimes I’m a bad girl. Sometimes I break the rules. And I’m like oh shit let’s have sex.”
So they go down to the Boom Boom Room. Jasmine overhears them. So then Jasmine, Aasha, and Kylie jump in there with them. So it’s: Jenna, Kai, Aasha, Jasmine, and Kylie. Okay then.
Yeah, so apparently this was “strategy”? Because if Kai and Jenna are not a match and they’re still having sex, if you throw more people in the mix, maybe one of them will be their match? LOL.
Next morning at breakfast: Jonathan’s like, “I heard there was a five some last night. Kylie’s like, “I was in there. I can spill all the tea.” Jonathan asks if Kari was in there, and she says no. Oops.
Jonathan says, “You have one perfect match in this house. Not five. Kind of disrespectful.”
Basit says, “I’m definitely feeling, like, FOMO right now.” Poor Basit.
Time for a boat date! Danny says it’s so nice to be on a date away from the house. Does he know about the fivesome tho? I feel like Danny got left out of not only the fivesome, but the conversation about the fivesome. Poor Danny.
On the date, Jenna says she wants to be honest with Danny and tells him that she does feel more of a friend vibe. And if she had been approached by him on the first day, it might have been different. Danny says, “You’re chasing after the wrong thing. I want to have real love, and I have had real love in the past, and I think that love can be rational.” Y’all. I love Danny.
Back at the house, Justin and Max and making up on the hammock. And I loved this conversation so much that suddenly I’m stanning Max and Justin. This is what I love about Are You the One. The twists and turns. It was only, like, last week that I hated Max. Now I would die for this couple. This is how the conversation goes down:
Justin says, “I was using the game as a crutch to not get close to you, and you’re worth getting close to.”
Max says, “I just feel like such an idiot. I look like such an idiot. You possess this strange power over me to make me go off the rails.”
“I just don’t want to get close to someone and have it ripped away.”
“So you’re just going to rip it away from me first?”
“I’m sorry. I won’t do it again because of how much it hurt you. And now I’m not afraid to get close to you.”
Here’s my fav part. Max says, “Now I gotta take you back. I don’t want to. But you’re the only one I want. And I’m going to give this another shot, for some fucking reason. But if you fuck me over again, I’m going to throw your ass in the pool with a pile of bricks. But I won’t throw it all the way into the deep in because I don’t want you to drown but I want you to struggle. Just don’t hurt me again, okay? Promise? Say you promise?”
They make up. Nour sees this going down and she’s frustrated. She says she’s over it. She says Max and Justin aren’t meant to be together. You know what, Nour? I’m over you. Like for real Nour is the worst.
TRUTH BOOTH TIME! Terrence J. asks everyone how the date went. Kari says she’s into Kai, but she doesn’t mess with people who aren’t done messing around with their exes. Kari says Kylie is still her girl.
Terrence asks if Kai and Jenna have hooked up since the truth booth. Everyone starts acting shady, so Terrence is like, did something happen last night that we need to address?
Terrence J is getting all stern parental figure on us.
So the kids tell Daddy Terrence about the threesome. Kylie said she was going to talk to Kari about this later. And Kari’s like, “No, I want to know now.”
Kylie’s like, yes, we were drunk and there were a few of us that did some things. Kai was involved Jenna was there too. Kari’s like what kind of things. Kylie says just making out, and some people got their *** out (did she say pussies? I couldn’t tell). Anyway, no matter who got what out, Kari is not happy.
Sort of as an afterthought, Terrence J announces that Danny and Jenna have been voted into the Truth Booth. I feel so bad for Danny at this point, because he deserves so much better. Jenna is not into this. She says, “If we were a match, it would be great, but it would also be sad because I don’t feel anything for him.” Danny responds, “But at the same time, I can see a lot of reasons why we could be really good for one another.” NO DANNY! FIND SOMEONE WHO LOVES YOU!
They’re not a match, so Danny heads to the Basit couch of therapy. He tells Basit, “Three years ago, I thought I was going to be married. I thought I had my whole life laid out and then I didn’t. I was engaged. She fell in love and threw everything we had away for it. It made me feel like everything I was building my life around didn’t mean shit.”
Basit says “If you had been in the honeymoon suite with Jenna, I don’t think you would have been the happy and satisfied Danny that you deserve to be. I’m happy you’re still here.”
WHY IS THIS SHOW TRYING TO BREAK ME!?!? I just want Danny to be happy, y’all!!
Let’s just go to the Match Up Ceremony. Here’s what we get:
First up, Danny chooses Basit. Everyone in the house is smiling and happy. It’s clear they all ship this. Danny says, “Basit was able to make me feel calm and supported.” I love Danny and Basit as friends, but I don’t know if I see sexual chemistry? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Kylie picks Jonathan. Max says this match up makes no sense, but clearly Kari is pissed at her so she isn’t going to pick Kari. So much for the strategy of sitting together at every Match Up Ceremony. That went out the window rather quickly.
Remy picks Aasha. Max says, “This house is getting super messy and I’m kind of getting a little confused.” Because apparently Max is our Match Up Ceremony commentator this week.
Kari picks Kai.
Brandon picks Jasmine. I would love to see more of Brandon. What’s he been up to?
Justin says “Tonight my perfect Max…match is Max.” I’m so INTO THIS. He was so excited about picking Max that he said my perfect Max and it was so cute. Color me heart-eyed.
Amber picks Nour.
Jenna picks Paige.
And they get…
If Max and Justin are not that one beam, my lil heart is going to break. I don’t care about how that affects my previous predictions. Also, it feels like Kari and Kylie are probably a match.
But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
I know we didn’t have an “Are You Emily’s One?” corner last weekend. I’m going to be honest. Last week I was so pissed at Nour that I really could only have had an “Are You Emily’s Negative One?” and who wants that? But we’re back this week. This week, the clear winner is Basit. They were there to comfort not one, but two, of their friends in the house this week. If you go back to my first recap, you’ll note that Tyler predicted that there would be no support system in the house because of the set-up. Well, Tyler didn’t know about Basit.
In a nutshell: if you don’t love Basit, what is wrong with you?
And that is all! See you people next week.
