Such Sights to Show You: Hellraiser (2022)

October 28, 2022 Mary and Kyle

(Hulu)

Kyle: A question: is it too much flesh or not enough flesh?

Mary: Wow, this is a big thing to start off with, isn’t it? For me, this Hellraiser has too much flesh, because I personally prefer the latex and leather of the original. That said, I think the way the flesh was stripped off of some of the cenobites was honestly very creative. I’d never have thought to use skin as a stylish hood.

But maybe we should back up before diving into such a question.

As you might have guessed, friend of the pod Kyle is joining me to talk about Hellraiser (2022), the latest installment of the Hellraiser franchise. It’s been years since we’ve gotten a Hellraiser movie, and even longer since we’ve gotten a good one. I know that we’ve both been eagerly anticipating this release, so I’m pumped to finally get to discuss it with you. Or, well, discuss it more. We did talk about it when we watched it! What stood out to you most about this film? What were you most excited to see?

(Some spoilers for the Hellraiser series to follow)

October 18, 2022 Kelli & Mary

via Amazon Studios

Kelli: Regular listeners of our podcast and readers of our blog will know that there are several things we’re deeply obsessed with, and one of those things is the novel My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. We even did a whole episode about it! So you can imagine that we were very, very pumped when we learned that the book was going to be adapted for the screen, and that we’ve been waiting on tenterhooks ever since.

Othersode #72: Witches In, Children Out / Hocus Pocus 2 with Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson

Come little children and join us for our witchiest episode ever as we discuss Hocus Pocus 2. We’re joined by returning guests Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson, authors of Toil and Trouble: A Women’s History of the Occult, who contribute their expert knowledge to our conversation about the long-awaited sequel to the 90s Halloween classic. After the review, we dig into Toil and Trouble, covering Mel and Lisa’s favorite witchy research topics, their thoughts on witchtok, and the very real Satanic Panic we’re going through at this very moment. We also read some listener feedback from podcast superfan Susan, and from Jordan, who has waited very patiently. Read along for our next episode on 10/31 when we’ll be discussing Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield, and stay tuned for our 11/14 othersode on the new Netflix series The Midnight Club.

BSG #72: Shout Out to Babies Everywhere / The School for Good Mothers

This week, accompany the three remaining non-mothers of the squad for a discussion of The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan. We discuss the way the book explores the intersection of race, motherhood, and the legal system, officially coin the term “low scifi,” and fantasize about casting Oscar Isaac in the upcoming adaptation. Plus: we finally read Jordan’s listener feedback! Join us for our next episode on 10/17 when we’ll talk Hocus Pocus 2 with Melanie Anderson and Lisa Kröger – authors of Toil and Trouble: A Women’s History of the Occult — and don’t forget to read along for our next bookpisode on Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield on 10/31, because nothing says Halloween like sad lesbians. We DARE you to send us your feedback to thesquad@booksquadgoals.com!

We're Glad This Book is Called I'm Glad My Mom Died

September 28, 2022 Kelli & Emily

Emily: This blog post has been a long time coming, but we’ve finally gathered here to discuss Jennette McCurdy’s bestselling memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died. Thanks so much to Jayce, former guest and friend of the pod, for joining us for this chat!

McCurdy is a former child actor and star of the Nickelodeon TV series iCarly. In this book, she explores her difficult relationship with her mother, how her mom manipulated her, forced her into acting, encouraged her to develop an eating disorder, and more.

The book covers very difficult material, but nevertheless the book is reaching a very wide audience. I was interested in reading the book because I have been a huge fan of iCarly (and specifically McCurdy) for years. But a lot of people picking up the book are people who have no previous knowledge of McCurdy and her career. I think that’s so cool because I don’t think that’s something we see often with celebrity memoirs. So I thought I’d start by asking you guys: What made you pick up this book? And why do you think so many people are reading it?

BSG #71: You Made A Fool of Death with Your Podcast / Akwaeke Emezi's You Made A Fool of Death

Oh listener, why did you have to go and make a fool of death with your (insert noun here)? This week, the Squad discusses Akwaeke Emezi’s romance novel You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty, and that last sentence was just a little taste of all the bad jokes we make about this title. We also get into genre tropes, grief, and the instantaneous orgasm, and we even make time to read some Goodreads reviews. What did you think of this book? We’d LOVE to hear from you, so please drop us a line at thesquad@booksquadgoals.com! Don’t forget to tune in for our next episode on 9/19 with special guest Clay McLeod Chapman where we’ll talk with him about his new book, Ghost Eaters, after a review of the 1973 horror classic Don’t Look Now. YA Book Club: The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes

September 25, 2022 Mary & Emily

Mary: Here we are with another YA Book Club! This one has a big back-to-school vibe for me, since a bunch of it takes place in high school, and even though school around here technically started back in July, I’m still feeling the Fall school feels. What made you want to pick this book, Emily?
